The Spanish Government and the Autonomous Communities have opted to promote the sequencing to detect early the appearance of new variants of covid-19 y for promoting the campaign vaccination of variant-adapted second booster doses, especially the most vulnerable people.
These are some of the decisions adopted this Thursday at the meeting of the Public Health Commission in which the evolution of the coronavirus has been monitoredafter the increase in cases in China, as well as the measures implemented both at the national and European levels.
Among the new variants found is the XBB.1.1, known as Kraken, which, according to the latest data provided by the Ministry of Health, has already been detected in Spain, with confirmed infections in the Basque Country and Madrid.
Last week, The Department of Health of the Basque Government reported the detection of the first infections of this variant -not related to China- and cataloged the cases as “sporadic”, while the Community of Madrid has given the voice on the first sequenced, so that those detected in Spain amount to 5.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also warned last week about the increase in cases of the omicron XBB.1.5 subvariant in Europe and the US and that some experts in the North American country see the potential to cause a new wave of infections.
