Public force against Mexican Judicial Branch workers denounced

Since the morning of Monday, August 19, workers of the Federal Judicial Branch (PJF) have begun a work stoppage in response to the reform proposal issued by the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Protesters have said the reform represents a direct threat to labor rights, as it seeks to eliminate the judicial career, a merit-based system that guarantees access to federal judgeships.

In response to their concerns, the judiciary workers have requested that the deputies and the Constitutional Affairs Committee establish a direct dialogue with them. They insist on the need for working groups where experts can analyse in depth the complexity of the reform and its consequences.

Amid the protests, a video circulating on social media has denounced the use of public force against workers who were demonstrating in front of the facilities of the Judicial Branch in Mexico City.

The recording has sparked a wave of criticism of the federal government, with accusations of oppression.

“In an unprecedented event, the Government of Mexico City uses public force against employees of the Judicial Branch of the Federation, while criminals remain unpunished (…) this is the beginning of a dictatorship headed by the Executive Branch that expects laws to be approved as they please” testimony that can be heard in the recording.

According to PJF spokesmen, they will be on strike for an indefinite period and will only deal with cases that were already in process as of Monday, as well as urgent matters related to health and criminal matters, that is, those that determine freedom or when there is a risk to life.
