Public chargers for electric cars have become significantly more expensive, the costs can exceed gasoline

Since July, the largest operator of charging stations, ČEZ, has raised the prices of public charging stations depending on performance from six, eight or ten crowns per kilowatt hour to eight, 13 or 18 crowns. The most common charger with direct current, providing 50 kW of charging power, charges 13 CZK / kWh.

“The reason for this shift is mainly the unprecedented movements in the energy market, which CEZ buys for the charging station network at market conditions. Also the fact that the ČEZ charging station network has doubled in the last two years. it has an impact, “spokesman Martin Schreier said.

Likewise, E.ON has also gotten up to 50% more expensive since August. Pražská energetika changed the price list from April 1st. She also switched to different prices depending on the type of charging connection used.

According to EY automotive expert Petr Knap, motorists still mostly charge at home or at work for a price of up to five crowns per kWh. According to Knap, around 80% of top-ups are for charging outside the public grid. The cost of driving a kilometer in an electric car recharged at home will therefore be less than one crown, while for cars with an internal combustion engine it is around 2.50 CZK / km.

“However, with public charging at a price between 13 and 20 CZK per kWh, the driver of an electric car can easily exceed the level of a conventional oil-powered car,” Knap noted.

Of course, the price per kilometer also depends on the energy consumption of the particular car, just like with conventional cars with internal combustion engines. The real consumption of electric cars is generally between 16-33 kWh / 100 km.

Furthermore, according to Schreier, the price per kilometer driven for electric cars cannot be derived from the prices for charging in the public station network, because drivers mostly charge electric cars overnight at home or in the company for the fare. approved. Public charging stations are a supplement for long distance travel.

“Prices per kilometer are currently between 1.10 and 1.40 CZK / km and driving an electric car remains significantly cheaper than driving a classic car,” added Schreier.

During this semester, 12,183 battery electric passenger vehicles were registered in the Czech Republic. The number of charging points is approximately 1900.
