Public Broadcasters Want More Money for Future Broadcasting Contributions

While the procedure for the broadcasting fee between 2025 and 2028 is currently underway, the public broadcasters are announcing their financial plans to the Commission for Determining the Financial Needs of Broadcasters (KEF). No specific amounts are given, but various media reports have been saying for weeks that ARD, ZDF and Deutschlandfunk would like to have more money from the contributors.

While the public broadcasters want more money on the one hand, they also have each other on the other hand known about savings efforts. For example, the ARD wants to maintain the savings efforts of the current and next contribution period. The rates of increase are between 2 and 3 percent for both ARD and ZDF and are thus (significantly) below the inflation rate. The price increases can be offset at ARD through savings, and ZDF must also offset the real cost trend through savings in the coming contribution period. In view of the increased contributions, one would like to invest in new technology. For example, Deutschlandradio has applied for funds to strengthen non-linear offerings.

In any case, it will be a few more months before the KEF reports back with the amount of future broadcasting contributions. Results and recommendations should be available in early 2024.
