PtD: There are no conditions for the appointment of an envoy

There are no conditions for the appointment of the UN Secretary General’s envoy for the Cyprus issue, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulidis, said on Thursday, responding to a journalist’s comment that the Turkish side sets six months as a condition regarding this appointment.

In his statements, attending a working lunch with Ambassadors of EU member countries, hosted in Nicosia by the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the EU, President Christodoulidis said that “there are no conditions, I heard the statements. The UN Secretary-General is bound by the resolutions of the UN Security Council, from there the Secretary-General receives his mandate,” he said.

“I hope there is political will and we can move towards the resumption of talks much faster. It won’t take six months if there is political will,” he added

To a journalist’s remark that the Turkish side excludes the federation, the President of the Republic replied that the Secretary-General, who the Government hopes will appoint a personality to explore the prospects for resuming talks, is bound by the very resolutions of the Security Council of the UN.

“This is where the UN Secretary-General gets his terms of reference from, so his envoy also moves within the same framework,” he said.

When asked if the Turkish side responded positively to the appointment of a specific personality, the President of the Republic said that “we have no official information from the UN that there was an official response. We know from statements (of the Turkish side) that were made.”

More general questioning of the status of the dead zone from the Turkish side

The President, who was also asked about the situation in the dead zone, pointed out that “there is a dispute from the Turkish side of the dead zone, with different incidents, a timeless attitude that we do not under any circumstances degrade. We have also stood up to the United Nations and the European Union, we are taking all those actions – this is our priority – to make the residents who live in the surrounding areas feel safe and whenever more is needed, rest assured that we will do it.” , he said.

In response to a journalist’s remark that the occupying regime is building fortifications in Deryneia, the President of the Republic said that he has information about what is being done but would not like to publicly refer to this matter.

He added that there is this general approach of questioning the status of the dead zone, which he saw when he recently visited Agios Dometios, but he sees it every day from the reports he receives.

Asked to comment on the arrest of Cypriot students who participated in a protest event in Athens, during the visit of the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the President of the Republic said that “I have seen it through publications, I don’t know the details, but I have read it”. .
