PtD: No one is above our reputation. Everything will be investigated

Everything that came to light will be investigated and no one is above the reputation of our country, said tonight the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulidis, when asked to comment on foreign publications that came to light tonight regarding Cyprus.

In his statements to journalists, at an event in Paliometochos, the President of the Republic, when asked to comment on today’s publications against Cyprus in relation to Russian oligarchs, said that “no one, no one is above the reputation of our country.

In addition to what has been done all these years, because important decisions were made, let me remind you that even after the assumption of the duties of the new Government and on the occasion of the sanctions by the British and the Americans, we proceeded to further strengthen the entire institutional framework. Everything that has seen the light of day will be investigated and indeed with a time horizon. I repeat, no one and no one is above the reputation of our country”.

In a clarifying question regarding the time horizon to which he referred, the President of the Republic said that “no one, no one is above the name of our country. All the information that has seen the light of the public will be investigated and even with a milestone. We should be done with this matter. The reputation of our country, the credibility of our country, you understand that it is of crucial importance in the effort of all the Cypriot people, so that we have a strong and resilient economy that will allow us to have a targeted social policy, a strong economy that will it allows us to invest in the Health, Education and other sectors. So, of course, it is an issue that is very high on our priorities. I repeat for the umpteenth time, no one can be and is not above the name and reputation of our country and everything that comes to light will be investigated.”

Asked when he will have his telephone conversation with the UN Secretary General, the President replied “very soon”.

When asked if he has discussed the issue of repealing the veto with the political leaders in Cyprus and asked about the safety nets that the Government Spokesman referred to earlier today, the President of the Republic said that “it has not officially, at least at the EU level, officially, I repeat, been raised such a subject. There are informal consultations and there is an issue that concerns the EU. What I have mentioned and I am happy about the interest that exists in European issues is that first and foremost we have to define what is the European interest, what is the EU’s interest in to touch on all other issues including the issue of veto removal. What I can tell you from the informal consultations so far, because they are informal, is an issue that I don’t think will go forward.”
