PT Takeda Innovative Medicines and Alodokter announced the collaboration between the two companies as a form of commitment and active participation in fighting dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) in Indonesia. This collaboration is reflected in a series of activities and initiatives, both aimed at health workers, the general public and employees, to control and prevent the spread of the dengue virus.

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes with the fastest spread and is a major public health threat. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue hemorrhagic fever is one of the main threats to public health in the world and in Indonesia as a hyperendemic country. Data from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia states that there will be a total of 114,435 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever during 2023 with 894 deaths, down from the previous year of 143,266 cases and 1,237 deaths. Meanwhile, in 2024 up to the 11th week alone, 35,556 cases were recorded with 290 deaths.

President Director of Takeda Innovative Medicines, Andreas Gutknecht, expressed his appreciation for the commitment shown by Alodokter to jointly educate about the dangers and prevention of dengue fever. “DHF is a life-threatening disease and to date there is no specific treatment for DHF making prevention the key. Therefore, we welcome the partnership with Alodokter as a trusted source of health information, to jointly increase public awareness and knowledge of health workers “about dengue fever, its prevention and treatment. Takeda is building a partnership with the Ministry of Health through the joint campaign #Ayo3MplusVaksinDBD, which invites all Indonesian people to apply 3M Plus consistently to limit mosquito populations, as well as consult with doctors regarding innovative interventions through vaccination.”

Andreas also underlined the need for more education about dengue fever and innovative interventions in preventing dengue fever. “There are still many misunderstandings regarding the risk, severity and prevention of dengue. In Indonesia, everyone is at risk of contracting dengue, regardless of age, where they live, or lifestyle. DHF mainly impacts the active age population and is the main cause of death for children -children. Protection through vaccination is recommended by medical associations not only for children but also adults. Therefore, let us continue to enrich ourselves with knowledge about dengue fever and its prevention through trusted sources, to protect ourselves and the people we love. Together we can fight dengue fever and achieve the Indonesian government’s goal of zero deaths due to dengue by 2030.”

Founder and President Director of Alodokter, Suci Arumsari, said that Alodokter takes the dengue problem seriously. “Currently, Indonesia is still facing serious challenges in handling dengue cases. Even though prevention and control efforts have been carried out, the number of dengue cases remains a major concern in the health sector in this country. Factors such as extreme weather, rapid urbanization, and lack of awareness “The importance of eradicating mosquito nests is a number of factors that contribute to the high number of dengue fever cases.”

Alodokter believes cross-sector collaboration and higher public awareness are needed to address this problem effectively. For this reason, being able to work with Takeda in increasing the knowledge of health workers is an opportunity for us to participate in encouraging the improvement of the capabilities of health workers in handling dengue fever in Indonesia. At Alodokter, we prioritize medical excellence. We ensure that we always remain a trusted source of information, both for health workers and the general public, where all the material we release has gone through a strict verification process from company experts, including material related to dengue or DHF.

“Not only that, we also realize that prevention must come from ourselves. For this reason, we also ensure that in our office, the 3M Plus movement must always be implemented. So, we strictly avoid places or areas that allow water to stagnate or accumulate “items that have the potential to become places for dengue mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Apart from that, we encourage our employees to work together to prevent the spread of the dengue virus, including through innovative prevention in the form of vaccines. In the end, prevention is better than cure,” concluded Suci.

Be alert for dengue fever ahead of the Eid al-Fitr holiday

In the near future, Indonesian people will welcome Eid al-Fitr. This moment cannot be separated from the culture of returning to one’s hometown or going home. This also needs attention, considering that an individual is not only at risk of contracting dengue fever, but also has the potential to spread the dengue virus if infected.

When a mosquito bites someone who has the dengue virus in their blood, the mosquito will become infected with the dengue virus. Infected mosquitoes can then transmit the virus to healthy people by biting them. Dengue fever cannot spread directly from one person to another, mosquitoes are needed to transmit the dengue fever virus.

The risk of dengue fever is higher in densely populated areas such as urban settlements, including parks and playgrounds located within them, because there is a higher chance of encountering Aedes aegypti and infected humans. Areas that are still forested have a lower chance of finding Aedes aegypti and infected humans. This is because dengue mosquitoes can fly several hundred meters to find a container of water and lay their eggs and several mosquitoes per household can cause a large dengue outbreak.

For this reason, implementing 3M Plus (draining water tanks, closing water reservoirs, and recycling unused items, as well as preventing mosquito bites and breeding) is an important key in preventing dengue fever, as well as considering innovative prevention through vaccination.
