Psychologist Costin Dămăşaru Discusses the Benefits of Reading and Handwriting for Brain Health with Andreea Cigolea on Antena 3 CNN

Psychologist Costin Dămăşaru spoke, in the column Health advice with Andreea Cigolea, from Antena 3 CNN, about the benefits of reading and handwriting for the brain.

“The brain is greatly affected if we only sit on devices and stop writing by hand. Why? Well, because in human evolution, the brain has become accustomed to communicating through symbolism.

Replacing handwriting with devices drastically reduces the brain’s ability to actually understand what is happening around.

The moment I write by hand, I take my time, I give myself time. When you write by hand you are much more attentive. You are in a relationship with yourself and studies show that traumatic information can be much more easily assimilated, eliminated when you write it in a journal.

It is recommended that you keep a journal. When you write you have a different vision. The brain sees the whole of what is happening and gives you a different perspective. Neuroplasticity is among the benefits of handwriting. At the same time, the ability to understand what is actually happening from another perspective.

Why does the world no longer write today? Due to lack of time or because it seems silly to them? Very important to say, the goal of the brain is to keep you alive and consume as little energy as possible. The moment you start writing, more energy is consumed. And then, you say why should I consume more energy. You start making up excuses like it’s hard to write and you don’t have time to do it. In fact, all these are stories created by the brain, so as to justify the desire to stop using unnecessary energy.

To stimulate the brain it is important to set aside time for ourselves and meditate or pray for 20 minutes a day. When you sit with yourself and meditate or pray, you give your brain time and energy to begin to understand itself so that it can help you make the right decisions. If you don’t make the decisions for yourself, others will.

For example, if someone said something to you at work and you got angry, if you start writing in your journal, somehow you will see everything that happened from a different perspective. When you write, you do therapy with yourself. You are actually doing therapy. Maybe you can’t afford to go to therapy.

The latest theories in the field say that there are three major stages of human brain development. The first stage is epigenetic. Epigenetics is the branch of genetics that studies variation in phenotypic traits that are caused by aspects of the environment, which change the behavior of genes and affect how cells decode them.

There are studies that show that traumatic information can be transmitted from seven generations. That is, if a great-grandfather had a trauma, it can be transmitted. That information was stored in organs and seven generations to descendants. The second stage is when we are in the mother’s womb. All the negative emotions she felt were amplified and transmitted to the fetus. Some genes have been activated which, in fact, metaphorically speaking, are the cries of the ancestors who are screaming at you.

The brain has found this amazing way to protect us over generations. How? Conveying traumatic information. For example, Romeo and Juliet. They were part of families that had hated each other for centuries. William Shakespeare’s moral was that transgenerational trauma can be resolved by two great methods: love or death.

The third stage is when the baby is born. It begins to imitate what is happening around using mirror neurons,” the psychologist added.

As we age, both the body and the brain begin to age and need extra attention. The good news is that we can improve our chances of a healthy brain by adding smart foods to our diet.
