Psychological distress and COVID-19: Healthcare workers adapt well despite difficult conditions

A research team from the CHUM Research Center (CRCHUM) and the Research Center of the Montreal Mental Health University Institute (CR-IUSMM) belonging to the CIUSSS de l’Est-de-l’Île-de- Montreal shows that 85% of the healthcare workers followed have shown resilience in the face of the stressful experiences of the first wave of the pandemic.

In a hospital or a CHSLD, the stress felt by hospital staff takes on several faces: anxiety, insomnia, depression or even psychological distress. To help them ensure their well-being, Dr Nicolas Bergeron, psychiatrist and researcher at the CRCHUM, and Steve Geoffrion, researcher at CR-IUSMM and professor at the University of Montreal, launched in May 2020 a mobile application of self-monitoring of stress reactions.

Presented today, the recent analysis of anonymized data collected between May and September 2020 reveals an optimistic conclusion: “the majority of people monitored have recovered well from the stressful experiences they may have had. For nearly 85% of them, the distress felt was transitory. In the specific context of COVID-19, our study is one of the first in the world to draw a longitudinal portrait of the mental health of health personnel, ”indicates Dr. Bergeron, professor at the University of Montreal.
