Psychological complaints still the most common cause of incapacity for work

Psychological complaints are still the most common cause of disability. In 2020, more than four in ten disability benefits were paid out due to mental disorders, says the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).

For women, these include depression, intellectual disabilities, post-traumatic stress disorders and borderline; in men for intellectual disability, depression and schizophrenia.

In 2020, more than 758,000 people received disability benefits. There are slightly more women than men on disability benefits.

After mental disorders (42 percent), bone and muscle diseases are the most common diagnosis for disability benefits. This is about 19 percent. Diseases of the nervous system, eye or ear (10 percent) are number three.
