(Keystone-SDA) Following Thursday’s murder in Basel, the case involving the suspect from the University Psychiatric Clinics (UPK) is to be investigated externally. This is what Michael Rolaz, CEO of the UPK, told the media on Monday.
The treatment team of the patient, who presumably committed the crime while on unaccompanied leave, was “deeply affected” after the killing of a 75-year-old woman in the Breite district.
Health Director Lukas Engelberger and Security Director Stephanie Eymann expressed their condolences to the victim’s relatives. “If the strong suspicion is confirmed, it is true that we as a canton were unable to live up to our responsibility – I regret that,” said Engelberger.
The suspect, who is serving a sentence, was arrested on Friday afternoon following a public search. He is a repeat offender: after killing two people in 2014, he was already convicted and placed in the UPK.
