PSX Rebounds as Geopolitical Tensions Ease and Oil Prices Stabilize
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) benchmark KSE-100 index gained 1,021.40 points, or 0.67 percent, to close at 169,043.20 on September 18, 2026, according to Topline Securities Ltd. The partial recovery was driven by selective buying in key index-heavy sectors despite ongoing geopolitical anxieties and elevated global crude oil prices.
Geopolitical Shifts and Energy Markets Drive Relief Rally
Market sentiment shifted following remarks from US President Donald Trump suggesting the war with Iran could be nearing an end. This diplomatic signal, paired with easing oil prices, helped calm regional trading floors. According to Ali Najib, Deputy Head of Trading at Arif Habib Ltd (AHL), investor confidence received an additional boost from reports that Saudi Arabia had routed extra crude cargoes through Oman, mitigating fears of acute supply disruptions.
Even with the 0.67 percent recovery, the index traded within a wide band between 168,223 and 169,577. That volatility underscores how fragile macro conditions remain. High energy costs, persistent external-sector risks, and an upcoming International Monetary Fund (IMF) review continue to dictate institutional risk appetite across Karachi trading desks.
Corporate Disclosures and Index Contributions
Heavyweight equities provided the structural floor for Thursday’s session. Ten major corporations—including Pakistan Petroleum, United Bank, Mari Energies, Bank Alfalah, Habib Bank, Engro Holdings, Lucky Cement, Oil and Gas Development Company, Meezan Bank, and Maple Leaf Cement Factory—collectively contributed 717 points to the KSE-100.
Trading activity expanded alongside the price recovery. Total volume edged up 8.48 percent to reach 386.3 million shares, while the traded value climbed 3.10 percent to Rs20.09bn. Media Times Ltd dominated the volume chart, accounting for 42m shares.
National Bank informed the PSX that the Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan announced its judgment on September 16 dismissing the bank’s appeal regarding pensioners’ entitlement to government-announced pension increases.
Global Tech Rebounds Offer Parallel Sentiment
The Pakistani equity rebound mirrors broader international market dynamics where select buying countered recent volatility. Global sentiment stabilized after an earlier tech rout sparked by Chinese artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek and its cost-efficient R1 reasoning model. Nvidia shares recovered approximately half their losses to push market capitalization back above $3 trillion, while ASML shares jumped up to 10 percent in Amsterdam trading.
Christophe Fouquet, CEO of ASML, noted that lower deployment costs for artificial intelligence applications will ultimately drive structural demand for hardware over time.
Market Trajectory and Strategic Outlook
Sustained momentum on the PSX depends heavily on geopolitical developments and domestic fiscal discipline. Market analysts suggest that enduring buying interest relies on a sustained downward trend in global crude benchmarks. Until the upcoming IMF review clarifies foreign exchange reserve targets, corporate treasuries must maintain rigorous balance sheet buffers.
