PSV’s Historic 0-8 Victory over SC Heerenveen – Biggest Home Defeat in Club History

PSV is waiting for the moment when the championship can be officially celebrated. This may already be late on Thursday night, when Feyenoord drops points in the away game against Go Ahead Eagles.

So much for the festivities that will undoubtedly erupt in North Brabant in the coming hours, or otherwise days or weeks. Because PSV’s party was matched by a fun, dark evening for SC Heerenveen. One that will go down in the history books. After all, the 0-8 defeat is the biggest in the history of the club.

Just painful, for everything and everyone at Heerenveen. OK, PSV played well. Even excellent. But on the other hand, Heerenveen did nothing at all. A defensive blunder, a poor game by Mickey van der Hart and, above all, a soulless rally ensured that Heerenveen were 0-3 behind in no time. Malik Tillman (two) and Guus Til were right for PSV.

It looked like Heerenveen would have two, maybe three less players on the field than PSV. What Kees van Wonderen’s team showed was shocking, uncertain and sad. The people of Eindhoven could do whatever they wanted in the Abe Lenstra stadium, where the match started ten minutes later due to heavy traffic.

By half time it was already 0-5, thanks to goals from Til and Joey Veerman again. The latter returned to the stadium where he played for more than two seasons. Veerman has now become a decisive player in PSV’s championship team.

Substitutes at half time created some enthusiasm for a paralyzed Heerenveen. Ion Nicolaescu, Espen van Ee and Syb van Ottele came on for Pelle van Amersfoort, Simon Olsson and Pawel Bochniewicz respectively. Patrik Walemark even thought of making it 1-5, but his goal was disallowed for offside.

Soon after it was a hit on the other side of the field. A great goal by Johan Bakayoko, who hit the ball hard past Van der Hart through the underside of the crossbar. PSV marked the championship party for the away division, after which Luuk de Jong and Patrick van Aanholt completed the eight: 0-8. The match was stopped just before the end, after a group of PSV supporters set off large fireworks in the away section.
