PSV has won the KNVB Cup. In a spectacular final it managed to beat rival Ajax 2-1. The Eindhoven team managed to turn a deficit two minutes after the break. The cup win caused a big party among the 17,500 PSV fans who traveled along.
A cup final as a cup final should be. The PSV – Ajax match had (almost) everything a final should have. There wasn’t even good football then, but the passion and struggle that the players showed on the field was amazing. In addition, the supporters of both clubs created a great atmosphere in De Kuip.
The two best teams in the Netherlands faced each other. There is always rivalry between PSV and Ajax and that was reflected on the field. There was a fight for every meter and every five minutes there was a disturbance or a hard violation. There was not much football played, in the first half there was 25 minutes of pure playing time, but it was exciting.
PSV is all about
Ajax was the slightly better match in the first half and took the lead. Ryan Gravenberch cut out three midfielders and scored with a nice long shot. Just before half-time it seemed that the team from Amsterdam had doubled their lead, but Noussair Mazraoui’s 2-0 was rejected due to offside.
PSV seemed to be playing a lost game in a top match, but did not show character for the first time this season. Roger Schmidt’s team came out of the locker room great and turned the whole game around in two minutes. First it was Erick Gutiérrez who headed in a free kick. Not much later it was Cody Gakpo who put the Eindhoven team ahead with a long shot. 2-1.

Ambiance
Ajax seemed to quickly equalize, but again saw a goal disallowed due to offside. It was therefore not exactly PSV against Sunday evening in De Kuip. Ajax increased the pressure in the final phase and PSV was pushed back far. But Yvon Mvogo showed that he hasn’t forgotten about goalkeeping yet.
Supported by 17,500 PSV supporters, PSV survived. The fans who traveled along provided a great atmosphere throughout the day and were optimally rewarded with the cup win
Thanks to the 2-1 victory, PSV takes the KNVB Cup for the first time since 2012. An excellent performance. In addition, it immediately takes care of the fact that it cannot win real top matches. The Schmidt era will not go down in the books as the club’s most successful period, but the cup win ensures that the German can leave through the front door at the end of the season.
