PSV has convincingly reached the quarter-finals of the Conference League. In and against Copenhagen, the Eindhoven team won 0-4 thanks to an outstanding Mario Götze. It is PSV’s first European quarterfinal in eleven years.
Last week, during the first leg, you could already see after a few minutes that PSV was going to have a difficult evening. On Thursday evening, the opposite was the case. The people from Eindhoven started sharp and were very dominant.
The lead after ten minutes did not come out of the blue. It was again Eran Zahavi who was successful for PSV. The Israeli striker is in top form and has scored in the last five games. Now he got a beautiful pass from Mario Götze. The striker’s shot seemed to be turned after that, but the goalkeeper let the ball pass under him.
Super Mario
Götze was therefore already responsible for the assist with the opening goal: after just under forty minutes of football, he also appeared on the scoreboard himself. A few minutes earlier, he had been wrongly shown a yellow card. Much to the German’s anger.
That anger was soon turned into joy as he was the end station of a smoothly running attack. The midfielder was able to tap a cross from Philipp Max into the open goal.
Götze was not only important for the goals: he also played a very good game. The German was constantly released between the defenders and was always playable.
death kick
PSV seemed to be able to finish the game calmly, because they could boast of a comfortable 0-2 lead and because FC Copenhagen didn’t get a chance. But things didn’t calm down in the second half. The match was a real kicking match.
In the 65th minute, Cody Gakpo received a death kick. Denis Vavro came in very strong and should have been shown a red card. The referee only gave him a yellow card. The PSV attacker was unable to continue and had to leave the field after a long injury treatment. A downer. It is to be hoped for PSV that the injury is not too bad.
Busy schedule
Although FC Copenhagen was able to attack a little more in the second half, the lead was no longer in danger. Ten minutes before the end, Zahavi finally decided the match by scoring his second goal of the evening: 0-3. The final chord was for Noni Madueke who made it 0-4.
With the win, PSV can prepare for a busy schedule. There will be two additional matches on the agenda. It will play the quarterfinals of the Conference League on April 7 and 14. The return in particular is not exactly a favorable date. Three days later, PSV will play the cup final. All in all, the club is writing history with the quarter-final spot.
Of course this is just the Conference League and you can expect this from PSV, but in the past the people of Eindhoven have often failed to meet expectations. Now they are and so the supporters can look forward to another two wonderful European evenings.
