In March of this year, Thijs Slegers lost his battle against leukemia at the age of 46. His widow Sylvia not only lost her husband, but also the security of keeping their home in Veldhoven. Without Thijs’ salary she would no longer be able to pay it. The PSV player group decided to lend a helping hand, as is now evident from a posthumous interview with the Eindhovens Dagblad.

In the month of Slegers’ death, he and his family were surprised by a visit from Luuk de Jong. At that moment, the then press secretary of the Eindhoven team was discussing the future finances of his family together with former PSV director Toon Gerbrands.

Slegers’ family had to be able to continue living in the house without any worries, without any contribution from Thijs himself. De Jong assured the press secretary ‘that everything would be fine’.

“We as a group of players are going to help you,” said the PSV captain. “It will really work out, we will solve this together.” That caused emotions among Gerbrands, the Slegers family, the accountant present and De Jong himself.

Three quarters of a year later, Sylvia is still grateful ‘that the puzzle was solved’. “Where do you find something like that? It was a very special moment for all of us.”

She remembers her husband as a diligent, ambitious man, who nevertheless always put his family first. “When he was mowing the lawn, he was simultaneously unloading the dishwasher, watching television and listening to a podcast. And always with that phone to his ear, right? You had to give him the space to realize everything.” but he was with us when we had to.”

Slegers was told at the end of 2020 that he had acute leukemia. For this he had to undergo a stem cell transplant, which initially seemed to be successful, but later turned out to have side effects. The aftereffects of the transplant ultimately proved fatal. Slegers was a journalist for Voetbal International for most of his career and served as press secretary for PSV from 2015 until his death.
