With the draw against Sporting Portugal, PSV has received its first performance-related premium in the new Champions League. What does the (potential) income stream of the Eindhoven residents in the elite tournament look like?
Firstly, all 36 clubs in the main phase will receive a starting premium of 18.62 million euros. Furthermore, there are three other sources of income: performance bonuses, receipts and so-called value pillar. This last element is a combination of the previously used coefficient premium (the revenues based on past performance) and the market pool payment (the revenues through broadcasting rights).
You could do this part one market value premium can name. This is achieved via a fairly complicated formula, on the basis of which a shadow ranking of 36 teams is made. The higher a club ranks on this list, the higher the premium. This ranking has not been officially announced by UEFA. Partly based on recent years, we can estimate that PSV makes between sixteen and eighteen million via the value pillar.
The UEFA premium system was recently discussed extensively in FC Bankzaken:
The system has changed compared to previous seasons. The amount to be paid out per point has decreased (from nine to seven thousand), but what is new is that UEFA rewards based on the final score in the main phase. For example, the winner of the first phase will receive 9.9 million euros. The bottom line takes 275,000 euros.
There are also bonuses. Numbers one to eight of the table can expect two million euros and numbers nine to sixteen one million euros. Of course, there are also prizes to be earned per round in the knockout phase: one million euros for the intermediate round, eleven million euros for the eighth final, 12.5 million euros for the quarter-final, fifteen million euros for the semi-final and 18.5 million euros for the final. The winner will receive an additional 6.5 million euros.
Then of course there is the receipt. PSV is assured of four home games in the first phase. The always sold-out Philips Stadium will earn the club a total of approximately seven million euros, but in the table below we focus on the UEFA funds to which the national champion is entitled.
