The Austrian police suspect five Dutch PSV fans of having beaten up an Austrian man in Graz last night. That happened after the match PSV against Sturm Graz in the preliminary round of the Champions League.
The 32-year-old victim is stable but is still in hospital, said police spokesman Heimo Kohlbacher of Landespolizeidirektion Steiermark. He is badly injured on his face.
Relatively quiet
According to Kohlbacher, before and during the game, there were no indications that it would lead to major confrontations between fans. “There were minor incidents beforehand, but they were handled well by the police. There were hardly any problems during the match.”
As usual, the fans were separated from the stadium after the final whistle. “But what happens in the city center afterwards is more difficult to control.”
Around 11:15 p.m., a brawl broke out in the downtown area, in a street lined with bars and restaurants. There were witnesses, Kohlbacher said. The police do not want to disclose more details at the moment.
Suspects on the loose
A report has now been filed with the police. The five suspected Dutchmen have been arrested and interrogated, they have not confessed. They are now free again, whether they are still in Austria is unclear.
The investigation into the five has not yet been completed. When that is concluded, it will also be clear whether the five still have to appear in court in Austria.
Two years ago there were already fights between supporters of PSV and Sturm Graz in the Austrian city. According to local media, two officers were injured.
