The man who lost part of his hand when a heavy piece of fireworks explodedat PSV’s championship game on Sunday is in hospital. A photo shared on social media shows his right hand completely covered in bandages. “I’m missing my index finger, middle finger and half of my thumb,” he told RTL News.
The man seems to be recognizable from a television show. His name is Appie and he was seen in the series Problem Districts Woensel-West. He is also a familiar face at PSV games.
On Sunday evening, during PSV’s championship match against Sparta, things went very wrong. Pictures before the explosion show Appie walking across the street in front of the supporters cafe De Aftrap, just outside the stadium. Young supporters, who did not have a ticket for the game, were going around with the older one. One of them grabs him and together they fall on the cycling path.
Another video then shows Appie walking in the middle of the street with his right arm raised. Smoke comes out of his hand and seconds later there is a big bang. Appie walks towards the sidewalk and sees that his hand is completely open.
Stupid accident?
It is not clear how Appie got the cobra. Most of the people who saw the accident say that Appie picked up the cobra and ran away with it. Others claim that someone gave Appie the cobra.
Appie says to herself against RTL that he received heavy fireworks from a bystander. “I thought they were putting a torch in my hand, but it was a cobra.”
“I had heard there was a lot of damage, but I didn’t expect the fingers to be completely gone. Luckily I held the cobra above my head and not near my face, because it could have it would be much worse,” he said. “Despite strong painkillers, it’s all very painful,” says Appie. “I can still move the two fingers I have left a bit.”
The police still do not know if it is true that Appie got the Cobra in his hands. According to a spokesperson, it is now being investigated whether something criminal happened or if it is a stupid accident. Anyway, nothing criminal has been reported yet.
According to supporters, many (illegal) fireworks were set off at that location outside the stadium. A woman reports that she suffered burns to her face in the past and that she burned her hair with flying fireworks.
Then she saw how things could have turned much worse: “I saw that man pick up a piece of fireworks and walk around with it until it exploded. He then walked in confusion and bystanders came to help him. “
Captured
Many people saw the explosion and were very happy. An eleven year old boy saw it too. According to his mother, the boy came home from the championship game frustrated. “End of the party,” she writes on X.
