PSV continues unbeaten series with hard fought victory at FC Groningen | NOW

PSV did good business on Sunday in the Eredivisie. The people of Eindhoven booked a hard-won 0-1 win when they visited FC Groningen.

After fifteen minutes, Denzel Dumfries signed for the only goal of the game and his seventh goal of this Premier League season. Only the injured Donyell Malen scored more often for PSV than the right back (eleven times), while Cody Gakpo, like Dumfries, has seven goals to his name.

PSV has not lost five games in a row because of the victory over Groningen. After the top match against Ajax (1-0 loss) from the beginning of February, the Eindhoven players won from Willem II (3-0), ADO Den Haag (0-3) and Vitesse (1-2) and they took a point in the topper against Feyenoord (1-1).

With the fourteenth victory of this season, PSV comes to 49 points, one less than number three in Feyenoord. The team from Rotterdam played a match less than the team of coach Ernest Faber. Groningen remains in ninth place.

PSV had to make it to the Hitachi Capital Mobility Stadium on Sunday without the unsuited Mohamed Ihattaren and the suspended Gakpo. That allowed Ritsu Doan to kick off the club he played for from 2017 to last summer.

FC Groningen only comes to life in the last fifteen minutes

Groningen and PSV did not make a spectacle of the final piece in the 26th round. The initiative in the initial phase was with Groningen, which was also closest to the opening goal. Ko Itakura saw his volley be taken from a corner of the line and Deyovaisio Zeefuik wasted a good opportunity by not taking the ball properly.

Where the initiative lay with Groningen, it was PSV that opened the score after fifteen minutes. Dumfries steamed up on the right, took a high ball nicely with him and worked the ball in the far corner behind goalkeeper Sergio Padt. Moments later, the right back also appeared to initiate the 2-0, but Sam Lammers was just short of tapping his cross.

After a strong initial phase, Groningen rarely showed itself in favor of the goal of Lars Unnerstall and that remained the same after the break, while PSV did just as little. The second half started in the last fifteen minutes thanks to a strong final offensive by the home team. Mo El Hankouri saw his curled shot end up in the far corner, but Unnerstall got a hand on it.

It was thanks to the German goalkeeper that PSV was also spared a goal afterwards, as he also tapped dangerous distance shots of Ajdin Hrustic and Ahmed El Messaoudi a bit later. The last big chance for the equalizer was for Hrustic in the 89th minute, but he was already falling over and so PSV was released.
