It is striking that at Ajax every permanent value has remained. This while the team experienced the worst year in the club’s history last season. Frouws: “They had the idea: we have to push a number of players to the exit. But they are all still there. I can imagine that they expected more from this transfer summer.”
In order to strengthen the team, Oranje international Wout Weghorst came over from Burnley this week. A remarkable choice, given that the club has Brian Brobbey at its disposal.
‘The Weghorst of the past has dried up’
Studio analyst Gertjan Verbeek, who joined the team, does not understand Weghorst’s arrival. “I don’t think he’s an Ajax striker. The Weghorst of three or four years ago, when he was still scoring goals on a production line, has dried up a bit. He hasn’t shown it in the last year and a half, with the exception of his performances with the Dutch national team.”
Weghorst doesn’t really fit into the current Ajax style of play, Verbeek suspects. For that, he explains, there is too much quality missing within the team. “I don’t think Ajax is playing such dominant football at the moment and that they don’t create enough chances to find him in the sixteen. He can be dangerous there, certainly in the Eredivisie, but I have more confidence in Brobbey.”
