PSSI’s Strange Plan to Replace STY in the Indonesian National Team

The idea was raised by the General Chairman of PSSI Mochamad Iriawan on Tuesday (7/6). According to Iriawan, Shin Tae Yong has been in charge of three national teams; seniors, U-23, and U-19 at the same time.

The statement made by Iriawan is legitimate. Unfortunately, the plan was put forward when the Indonesian national team was preparing to fight for tickets to the 2023 Asian Cup finals.

Iriawan’s statement has the potential to disrupt the focus and concentration of Witan Sulaeman and his friends. The plan to replace Shin Tae Yong could actually be discussed later, after the Indonesian national team finished fighting against Kuwait, Jordan, and Nepal in Group A of the 2023 Asian Cup Qualification.

The statement has now been made and speculation regarding the change in the position of the Indonesian national team coach is growing wildly. Now PSSI will be waiting for its consistency in carrying out what has been said by Iriawan.

The question then leads to who is the replacement candidate for Shin Tae Yong in the Indonesian national team. But before going there, it is actually interesting to see further PSSI’s plan to make a change in the position of coach of the Indonesian national team.

Shin Tae Yong came up with a reputation as a world class coach. With the big name he has, Shin Tae Yong’s profile is clearly more suitable to remain in charge of the Red and White senior team than the age group national team.

Of course it would feel strange if Shin Tae Yong was then shifted to focus on the U-19 Indonesian National Team. Meanwhile, the position of coach of the Indonesian national team was filled by a coach whose curriculum vitae was less classy than Shin Tae Yong.

If PSSI really wants Shin Tae Yong not to be stuck, then the most appropriate post is of course still coaching the Indonesian national team. The coach from South Korea can hold concurrent positions to coach the U-23 Indonesian National Team, or another option for the position of coach of the U-23 Indonesian National Team and U-20 Indonesia National Team given to another coach.

The position of the coach of the U-23 Indonesian National Team and the U-20 Indonesia National Team can be assigned to a local coach or may be held by Shin Tae Yong’s assistant. As is the case today where Dzenan Radoncic is in charge of the Garuda Nusantara team in the Toulon Cup.

Shin Tae Yong can still get his share there. The 52-year-old coach can act as supervisor or supervise for the age group national team. The workload is certainly different and does not interfere with his focus on managing the Garuda team.
