Pss Pss: Compagnia Baccalà Opens Play Series at Chamäleon Theater with Poetic, Astonishing, and Timeless Performance

What Compagnia Baccalà brings to the stage of the Chamäleon Theater on Wednesday evening to open the “Play” series is poetic, astonishing, amusing, but not the least bit chatty. Camilla Pessi and Simone Fassari did not need words for their art of representation. Her piece “Pss Pss” is a fresh homage to the silent film era, to Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton. It works with clowning, juggling, artistry and, above all, with facial and gestural acting.

A woman wearing a hat enters the empty stage as carefully as if she were entering a newly discovered country. She digs a red-cheeked apple out of the children’s suitcase that she has with her. A man wearing a hat approaches hesitantly. He also wants the apple. An enchanting game of looks and movements begins between two people.

Attraction, repulsion, balancing. Zack, the apple is sitting on his hat. Clap, the apple bursts on the stage floor. Slapstick leads to handstand acrobatics, diabolo juggling, a musical competition of accordion versus trumpet, and suddenly a trapeze swing dangles from the ceiling. To get it you need a ladder, which in turn can be used as a wind instrument. Great.

Anarchy, fine wit and powerful physicality make “Pss Pss” seem fresh and timeless. The piece has been performed in more than fifty countries since 2010. As universal as it works, it offers the ideal introduction to the guest performance series “Play” (until February 11th at the Chamäleon Theater in the Hackensche Höfe). It brings together eight companies – from Finland to Australia – and offers a journey of discovery into the diversity of contemporary circus.

The first edition last year, which the Chameleon can now repeat in its 20th year of existence with funds from the German Class Lottery Foundation, was a success, as artistic director Anke Politz said before the show. 60 percent of the people who attended the sold-out performances came to the house for the first time. An “outreach moment”, as today’s cultural mediators call it. Feat: When “Pss Pss” ends, cheers and shining eyes fill the hall.
