A high-level meeting on the 20th anniversary of the PSI, the Proliferation Prevention Initiative to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, was held in Jeju.
After the delegations from each country issued a joint statement expressing their strong will to respond to illegal nuclear and missile development, a maritime interdiction drill involving multinational warships will be held today.

The Proliferation Prevention Initiative, PSI, launched in 2003 led by the United States.
It has expanded into an international cooperation system involving 106 countries, including Korea, which joined in 2009.
A high-level meeting is held every five years, and this year, which marked the 20th anniversary, was held by Korea for the first time as an Asian country.
It drew more attention as it opened while North Korea continues to threaten nuclear weapons and missiles and even announced the launch of a reconnaissance satellite.

Delegates from more than 70 countries agreed to actively respond to new non-proliferation challenges, including not only weapons of mass destruction, but also financial activities accompanied by cryptocurrencies.

Following the meeting, the ROK Navy will supervise a multinational maritime interdiction exercise in which vessels from South Korea, the US, Japan and Australia participate in the high seas southeast of Jeju.
The focus was on intercepting ships believed to be carrying weapons of mass destruction.
Ri Pyong-cheol, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea, also reacted sharply, saying that this exercise made the maritime blockade against them a fait accompli.
However, the schedule was drastically reduced due to bad weather in the training area.

Although the PSI is not targeting a specific country, a Foreign Ministry official stressed that the meeting and training would be a strong message of deterrence to North Korea.
