When the news broke on Sunday afternoon that Paris Saint-Germain would like to install Julian Nagelsmann as the new coach and thus as the successor to Christophe Galtier, it caused a shake of the head in France rather than enthusiasm.
“Should Nagelsmann actually sign on in Paris, the first hurdle he would have to overcome is gaining the respect of his players, which will certainly not be easy,” says Jimmy Algérino, who earned his money with the newly crowned champions between 1996 and 2001 conversation with SPORTS1.
“Stars like Kylian Mbappé, Gianluigi Donnarumma or Neymar will want to test him immediately and see what character Nagelsmann has, how he reacts in stressful situations, us on and on,” added the former defender.
“No matter who the coach is in Paris, the players do what they want, they have the power,” affirmed the 51-year-old. “In this respect, the question arises: will Nagelsmann be able to speak the same language as these players due to his young age?”
Algérino thinks it’s possible that he’ll be able to take these top stars to the highest level – “and that should be the basis to see if he can gain a foothold at PSG. But if I’m honest, you can have some doubts about that.”
Nagelsmann causes astonishment in France
When Nagelsmann was at Bayern Munich, he caused more astonishment than admiration in television debates in France, especially around the Champions League round of 16 between PSG and Bayern.
In particular, his demeanor at his press conferences was viewed more as arrogance than healthy self-confidence. For example, when asked how serious Mbappé’s absence in the first leg was, he replied: “I don’t think Mbappé will fail. He will definitely get fit in time.”
Before the second leg, Nagelsmann even said: “Kylian emphasized that the Parisians can hurt us if they have the ball and play attacking football, but it also applies the other way around.”
Trainer legend expresses skepticism: “Always lost my nerve”
The possibility that French striker legend Thierry Henry could be part of the future coaching staff of the German coach on the Seine was hotly debated in France.
“With Henry as my assistant, I would wholeheartedly welcome that decision,” the legendary French coach told Guy Roux SPORTS1. “But not with Julian Nagelsmann as number one, who I think is too young for such a task. PSG would rather need a coach who has gained a lot more experience in recent years.
And what does the former coach of AJ Auxerre think of Nagelsmann as a coach in general?
“Every time I saw Nagelsmann in front of the TV, he lost his nerve,” emphasized the 84-year-old. “That can’t go well at Paris SG for long. Accordingly, I see him as Galtier’s successor with skepticism.”
