The fact that a player who is too expensive for FC Barcelona flushes even more money into the coffers of another club after the commitment is a story that only a few football players can write. Lionel Messi, who celebrates his 35th birthday on Friday, is one of them. He gave PSG a whopping additional income in his first year, as President Nasser Al-Khelaifi told the Brand confirmed. And that despite an annual salary that is said to be around 40 million euros net.
In terms of salary alone, PSG also took a certain risk by signing the superstar. But those responsible for the Paris club promised themselves additional income in many different ways – and should be right.

As the Brand reported that the attractiveness of the top club, which had previously featured Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, increased again with Messi and raised PSG to a new level on many levels:
- the Messi transfer brought PSG ten new sponsorship deals, which contributed to a 13 percent increase in profit in this area
- the value of PSG’s cryptocurrency doubled after the transfer was announced
- shirt sales surpassed the magic mark of one million shirts sold for the first time – 60 percent of which were flocked with Messi’s name and number 30
- The demand for merchandise and lifestyle products from PSG rose by 30 to 40 percent – PSG has meanwhile moved the official fan shop to the Champs-Elysee, thereby doubling the sales area
- With the announcement of the Messi change, PSG generated 15 million new followers on the social media platforms, breaking the 150 million follower mark
- since Messi has been playing for Paris, every game of the Parisian club has been sold out – according to the club, they achieve record sales per seat among the top European clubs
The Argentine’s move has already paid off financially for PSG. His eleven goals so far last season should leave a lot to be desired for those responsible at PSG.
