Paris Saint-Germain Football Club is a French football club, better known as Paris Saint-Germain or PSG, is currently one of Europe’s top clubs. Not least because star footballers Lionel Messi, Neymar and Mbappé play for PSG. The club is from the Paris suburb of Saint-Germain-en-Laye and was founded in 1970, but emerged from the suburban club Stade Saint-Germain, which was founded in 1904.
PSG have now won 11 French championships and 13 French cups. In 1996 they also became European Cup Winners’ Cup winners.
The 80’s and 90’s
After winning the French Football Cup twice in the early 80’s, PSG have become increasingly successful. Finally, a championship title for the French followed in 1985/86. However, things went even better for the team in the 1990s, they won the football cup three more times and the league again in 1993/94. However, their greatest success was certainly that of beating Austria in the final of the 1995/96 European Cup Winners’ Cup.
The 2000s – in the midfield
After the turn of the millennium there were no really great successes, although the club invested a lot of money in new players. Pauleta, Stephane Dalmat and Nicolas Anelka were bought, Ronaldinho and Gabriel Hinze acquired cheaply. PSG was able to win the cup three more times, but only really impressed in the league after the beginning of the 2000s at the beginning. After that, the club found itself more in the midfield. In the 2007/08 season they were then almost relegated. It wasn’t until the 2010/11 season that things got better again, with fourth place they achieved their best placement for years, in the Europa League they made it to the round of 16. A year later they managed the runner-up, and another year later the third championship title.
PSG is becoming a top club
In the following seasons, PSG was able to successfully defend their championship title, in 2014/15 they managed to enter the winners’ lists in all four national competitions (league, state and league cup, and the Supercup). This made them the first French club to win the Quadruplé. All four titles were then defended in 2015/16, but the following year they were only runners-up for the first time in five years.
Neymar: Most expensive player of all time
After that, two big-name new players joined the club: Neymar was signed from FC Barcelona to PSG for €222m, making it the most expensive transfer ever. In addition, Kylian Mbappé came to Paris from Monaco for 180 million euros. The expensive transfers seemed to be paying off and in 2017/18 the side set a new goalscoring record in the group stage of the Champions League with 25 goals. However, they were eliminated in the round of 16. Meanwhile, however, a championship title was won again, as well as the 12th Cup and the eighth League Cup and Supercup.
Thomas Tuchel as coach, Champions League final
In 2018/19 the first German coach came to the club: Thomas Tuchel. In the European league PSG set a new starting record this season – 12 wins in the first 12 games and again they won the Supercup and the league title. Then in 2019/20 they won the Coupe de France and the Coupe de la Ligue, became champions and reached the final of the Champions League for the first time. The following year they made it to the Champions League final again, but again failed to win. They were also only runners-up this season, but they won Ligue 1 again this season.
