Sony Playstation 5 will soon receive a long-awaited update that can provide an improved gaming experience: This is the much talked about VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) finessen i HDMI 2.1, which is important to ensure seamless reproduction of the fast game graphics. The competitor Xbox Series X has been supporting this for a long time, and now the update to PS5 is just around the corner, if we are to believe Sony’s latest announcement:
We’re also pleased to announce that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) is scheduled for release on PS5 in the coming months. On HDMI 2.1 compatible TVs and PC monitors, the VRR dynamically synchronizes the refresh rate of the monitor with the graphical output of the PS5 console. This improves the visual performance of PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame rate and screen tearing issues. Playback in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes are rendered instantly, graphics look sharper and input delay is reduced. Previously released PS5 games can be fully optimized for VRR through a game update, and future games may include VRR support at launch.
According to Sony, it will also be possible to activate the VRR function on games that do not officially support it, and still achieve improved video quality. Should unexpected visual side effects occur, however, you can choose to turn the function off.
PS5 will get VRR update in the coming months
The announcement from Sony does not say exactly when we can expect the special update, but confirms that it will come in the “coming months”. Sony will release more details ahead of the launch, including which games will receive official VRR support!
