PS5 storage space leaks cannot be upgraded

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Sony states that consumers cannot increase the storage capacity of solid-state drive (SSD) PlayStation 5. Sony claims the additional SSD slots available on the PS5 will be disabled.

Sony did not explain in detail why it did not give consumers the opportunity to directly increase SSD capacity after having a PS5. The company only mentions that the additional SSD slots will be used for future updates.

Launch The Verge, The PS5 features a dedicated internal slot that would theoretically be compatible with the M.2 SSD in the long team. However, the slot appears to be disabled.

“This is recommended for future updates,” Sony said.

The limited capacity of the PS5 SSD is not a surprise. In March 2020, PlayStation hardware architect Mark Cerny said the SSD storage expansion feature was part of his technical preview.

“It would be great if it happened at launch, but it will probably be a bit overlooked, so please hold off on getting that M.2 drive until you hear from us,” said Cerny.

Cerny explained that not all M.2 SSDs are fast enough to keep up with the PS5, nor are they thin enough to fit in the SSD space or be compatible with PS5 I / O controllers.

Launch Game Spot, The company must verify the SSDs of the entire manufacturer for the safety of the PS5. The PS5 features a custom I / O interface worth checking for compatibility, beyond the 5.5GB / s minimum speed requirement that only some PCie 4.0 SSDs can achieve.

Limited SSD capacity will definitely limit consumers who plan to play a lot of games soon. This is because the PS5 does not have the same capabilities as the PS4 which can store and play games from an external HDD or SSD.

The PS5 has reportedly only had just over 650GB of usable storage so far.
