In recent months, Sony and Microsoft have unveiled their new next-gen consoles. Sony wants to extend its previous-generation victory with the Playstation 5, where Microsoft is taking a different approach with the Xbox Series X.
All well and good all those specs, but in the end the new console war is mainly fought over dollar signs. So the price tag of both machines.
Xbox Series X vs. Playstation 5
You can play the latest FIFA and Call of Duty on both consoles. Ultimately, the cheapest console will probably lead the way. Insiders previously revealed that Microsoft is willing to make a lot of losses on the hardware to ensure a head start.
We have noticed that too. Last week, the prices of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S were leaked and then officially confirmed. Then we are talking about 499 euros and 299 euros respectively.
The ball is with Sony
The Series S in particular is therefore very aggressively priced. You can already play next-gen games for the price of a Nintendo Switch. Now the ball lies with Sony, which has yet to reveal the price tags of both PS5 models.
Both manufacturers mainly waited for each other, given that both are willing to lose money on the hardware. The question is: how much loss does it take to get your hardware into every living room and thus recoup your losses over the next ten years with subscriptions and software?
Crisis consultation and new prices
Microsoft is clearly willing to go far, given the price tag of the Xbox Series S. It should come as no surprise that multiple sources have revealed to Gamereactor publication that Sony has entered into crisis counseling following Microsoft’s announcement.
According to reports, Sony initially wanted to charge 599 euros for the PS5 with disc reader, and 499 euros for the version without. During the crisis consultation, according to the same sources, it was decided to lower the price to 499 euros and 399 euros respectively.
Still a relatively big difference from the Xbox Series S, but the gap with the aggressive pricing Microsoft is already smaller. A threshold that, Sony hopes, gamers still dare to take.
On to September 16
Anyway, take that news with a grain of salt for the time being. If the past few weeks have taught us one thing, it is that Sony and Microsoft can still change their plans last minute. Hopefully the Japanese will come out with more official news soon! There will be a special PS5 event at 10pm on September 16th, hopefully we’ll hear more there.
