One of the highlights of the upcoming PS5 is the fast SSD, although apart from the undeniable benefits, there are some shortcomings with it. The new console will offer only 825 GB of disk space, of which only 670 GB will be dedicated to games. Unfortunately, in order to be able to comfortably run a larger number of titles, you will have to get an additional SSD drive, but this option will only be introduced in some time. Users were hoping for a simple workaround for this problem – while PS5 games would only run from SSD, did they come up with the idea of storing them on a regular USB HDD and then transferring them to the SSD before booting? In theory, a great idea, but in practice it turns out to be impossible to implement.
Unfortunately, PlayStation 5 games cannot be run or even stored on a standard hard drive. Players will be limited to 670 GB of space until other solutions are released.
People with early access to PlayStation 5 report that when a standard hard drive is connected to the system, a message appears that emphatically dispels all hopes. It turns out you can store and run backwards compatible PlayStation 4 games from a portable hard drive, but there is no such option for PlayStation 5 games. You can’t even store them there, transfer attempts fail to say. This state of affairs is also confirmed by the journalist and organizer of The Game Awards Geoff Keighley.
In fact, this is quite an incomprehensible limitation. It can be understood that Sony is blocking the PlayStation 5 games from running from the regular hard drive due to performance limitations and issues. But why can’t you just store the titles on a USB drive? So far, there is no official answer on this matter. It is possible that we will learn more about this topic after the premiere, which will take place on November 12 or 19, depending on the region.
