PS4 version Horizon Forbidden West can be upgraded to PS5 for free after all

Sony announced last week that no PS5 upgrade will be offered to customers who purchase the standard PS4 edition of Horizon Forbidden West. Gamers were forced to order the more expensive Digital Deluxe Edition in order to access the PS4 and PS5 versions, but the Japanese company has since reversed this decision. The PS4 version of the game can therefore be upgraded to the PS5 version for free next year.

In the future, all cross-gen first-party games, including God of War and Gran Turismo 7, can be upgraded for $9.99. “Thursday was to be a celebration of Horizon Forbidden West and the amazing team at Guerrilla working to deliver the game on February 18, 2022. However, it is very clear that the offer we confirmed during our pre-order kickoff has missed its mark,” said Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan.

“Last year we made a commitment to provide free upgrades to our cross-gen launch titles, including Horizon Forbidden West. While the major impact of the pandemic has pushed Forbidden West out of the period we originally envisioned, we’re sticking with our offer: players who purchase Horizon Forbidden West on PlayStation 4 can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version for free.”

“I would also like to confirm today that PlayStation first-party exclusive cross-gen titles (new to PS4 and PS5) both digitally and physically will offer a $10 USD digital upgrade option from PS4 to PS5. This applies to the following God of War and Gran Turismo 7 plus all other exclusive cross-gen PS4 and PS5 titles published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.”
