PS4 games submitted in mid-July must be compatible with PS5 – News

Our Eurogamer colleagues have today consulted the latest documentation published by Sony and sent to their future developer partners. After reading, they inform us of the latest directive from the manufacturer about compatibility: Sony asks developers of Playstation 4 games who wish to submit titles for certification from July 13 to make them compatible with Playstation 5.

Thus, from mid-July, all games submitted to Sony and intended for the PS4 must be technically compatible with the next generation. This request was added at the end of April in a new version of the manufacturer’s development kit. The latter declares that he wants to contact the teams one by one to ensure compliance with the conditions.

Note that a game will be considered compatible with the Playstation 5 if it provides the same functionality on both consoles. Also note that submissions are generally made well before the release of a title, to ensure that the certification team approves it on time.

There are also some details on Sony’s rules for patching existing games and remasters of previously released titles. Indeed, if a game was originally submitted to Sony before July 13, 2020, any new patch or remaster offered after that date would not require PS5 compatibility, but it would be “strongly recommended. Conversely, you will understand, if a game was originally submitted to Sony after July 13, 2020, any future patch or remaster to this game should be compatible with the PS5.

As a reminder, last March, the Japanese giant declared that backward compatibility on PS5 would be limited to a list of a hundred games – the most played – at launch. Many other titles would then be added to the list.
