PROXL3M: PRO8L3M’s Long-Awaited Album Now Available!

PRO8L3M’s long-awaited album—”PROXL3M”—is now available! The duo’s anniversary material is a unique album in their discography. Although it covers topics well known from previous releases, its conceptual approach is realized on two levels.

On the one hand, it is the story of a hero entangled in a web of events that lead to his downfall. On the other hand, “PROXL3M” is a treat for people who have been loyal to the band for years and know its discography by heart. After all, only they will know why the decade of PRO8L3Mu is counted from 2013. Here they will find references to many moments in the band’s history, not only in the lyrics, but also in samples, the sound of individual songs, and even in the flow. Musically, the album refers more often to pre-pandemic parties on the carpets of the Forum Hotel, where you could hear club deconstructions, than to ground-up rap trends, and thanks to Oskar’s wide openness to singing, Artbrut’s inspirations go beyond samples. The result is a unique contrast of futuristic sounds and bardic traditions of Polish pop.

Although PRO8L3M is usually written about in film terms, this time theater metaphors may be more accurate. The album “PROXL3M” is closer to an ancient tragedy, inevitable doom hangs over the hero. And although the story begins with a high note (“Yokohama”), the first half of the album, apart from various boasts, descriptions of scenes of violence and criminal activities or fleeting or failed relationships, also outlines a broad context, showing the material and social conditions in which a brutal individualism and alcohol rituals continue (“Anyone but me”, “S-Class”).

The entire album is tied together by references to sin, basically from the first to the last sample. Additionally, the story of the album’s hero is interwoven with seven short songs called the seven deadly sins, which show us his path. Beatings, thefts, drug dealers, brothels, a friend who was sold. They lead to the moment when reflection finally comes and an unsuccessful attempt to change the course of fate. When, at one of the album’s climaxes, words are spoken about the source of faith (“False Flag”), the question arises whether the hero’s story could have turned out differently at all. The ending (“We Made It”), however, suggests that the original meaning of the word sin is misunderstanding. But was another path possible?

The second, more reflective half of the album is a huge stylistic change, slower pace and some of the most captivating songs in PRO8L3Mu’s achievements. Although still strongly electronic, often with a club tinge, the irony of fate and enormous bitterness make the contrast between the two narratives stop (“Mayday”). “I Was a Man” fully realizes the potential of an outstanding sample, which is Bajmu’s “Lake of Happiness”, and from the very bottom, it introduces us to the field of metaphysical reflections on existence and leads to the cathartic ending, “Eternal Game”, which functions as the clincher of the entire album. and at the same time a philosophical clasp of our presence on earth performed by Oskar.

“PROXL3M” is now available on all streaming services. The physical version of the album is available at pro8l3m.pl. By the end of the week, the PRO8L3M EXPERI3NCE exhibition will be open at the melt museum, and then a concert tour will begin around the largest Polish cities, which will last until spring 2024.
