The Minister of Health, Adonis Georgiadis, once again expressed himself defiantly and insultingly towards the fighting health workers of the public hospitals. This time, Adonis Georgiadis was placed at an event of DAKE and described from his own perspective a gathering of health workers at the Asclepion of Voula during his visit to the specific hospital. There he belittled what the health workers were advocating, saying they were playing the same tape, and also mocked them for being negative towards the church, which caused the unionist right-wing audience to burst into laughter. Here is part of the Minister’s speech:
“I have been to the Asklepiion of Voula to see various machines donated by the big donors. There the Workers’ Association learns about it and they come. It is ladies and gentlemen, if you had seen that I was fighting with the President there in the Asklepiion and then she made an announcement there and so on. Well, 6-7 the whole mutiny only MUTINY, No SYRIZA, no conversation. Mutiny, Mutiny. We have a democracy. So we walk towards the Asclepion. An hour? For an hour there were children around my ears moaning about the well-known tape. The cassette is the same, it doesn’t matter. KKK ANTARSYA, SYRIZA, the same. The same, the same, the same, the same, the same, the same, the same. How long can you bear to listen to them. The same.
Okay, I’m no Gandhi, I’m no Gandhi. It’s not my strong point, so what should I do? I see in front of me a church, a very nice church in Asklepiio Voula. If you have been, I can say anything. I’m walking over there. I am followed by the commander, my people. We go inside, light candles with a cross, us. Says the commander. Wow, he says, we have a little peace.
And why did we come, I tell him, to the church. They don’t go into church, I say. And really guys, all seven of them were sitting across the street and didn’t even cross the sidewalk. Nor should they approach the church and suffer anything.”
One does not need to have been hospitalized in a public hospital in the last few years to know the very bad state the public health system is in. People are talking about it everywhere.
Nor does he need to have undergone any major surgery to know the self-sacrifice with which health workers struggle to fill the gaps that exist at every level. And yet, Adonis Georgiadis, from everything that doctors and nurses support, maintained that they are simply complaining and that they are playing the “same tape”.
As for the church, everyone can have whatever relationship they want with religion and whatever religion they want. One thing is certain, however, that health is not won by prayers. No matter how many churches they enter to pray, the Minister and his appointees, if money is not given for health, public health will deteriorate and the clinicians will hoard.
