The provisional toll of the fire in the Grand Marché de Conakry, which broke out on the evening of Tuesday April 4, 2023, is around twenty charred shops and several other significant material damages. It was the welding work that caused the fire.
All of the shops affected by the flames are in block C and so far the fire has not been fully brought under control due to certain combustible materials stored in shops.
« There was a serious firein this market. The worst, there is no fire hydrant where you can eat, there is no water reserve either. we leave to fetch water elsewhere, which makes it difficult to completely extinguish the fire.
This is a generalized conflagration in an enclosure. There are risks of explosion and metallic collapse. It’s not easy to hire the staff inside. It was the welding work that caused this fire, there was no power. explains Lieutenant-Colonel Ibrahima Sory Kaba, regional director of civil protection in Conakry.
