Vaccines against COVID-19 were added to the national vaccination strategy with the main objective of minimizing hospitalization and complications due to this cause. Currently, boosters should be given every 6 to 12 months, depending on risk and exposure to the disease.
The province’s Ministry of Health recommends that people aged 50 or older, pregnant people and immunocompromised people from 6 months of age are considered high risk for severe forms of COVID-19 and should receive a booster dose 6 months after the last dose given and then continue with the same frequency (a booster dose every 6 months).
On the other hand, people under 50 years of age with non-immunosuppressive comorbidities (chronic diseases, obesity), health personnel and strategic personnel are considered intermediate risk or people with high occupational exposure. This group should receive a booster dose 6 months after the last dose and then continue annually.
Finally, for people at low risk of contracting severe COVID-19, those between 6 months and 49 years of age inclusively without comorbidities, it is recommended to apply a booster dose 12 months after the last dose administered and then continue annually. .
It should be remembered that the COVID-19 vaccine can be applied together with the vaccines on the National Calendar, and that the health teams at the vaccination centers, health centers and hospitals in the province can provide information on how often it is necessary to get vaccinated. Boosters are necessary to sustain protection and prevent the development of severe forms of the disease.
