Province of Manitoba | Treatment for COVID-19

Our body creates antibodies to fight against foreign bodies. This treatment uses lab-created antibodies (proteins) and is intended to give people without prior antibodies to COVID-19 an initial immune response that can prevent the severe form of the disease. Monoclonal antibodies give the body temporary antibodies faster than your body can produce them.

They may also be helpful in preventing the severe form of COVID-19 in people with weakened immune systems that may not generate a robust response to COVID-19 vaccines or to previous infections. Treatment is only effective during the very first phase of COVID-19 infection.

Treatment with monoclonal antibodies is a one-off treatment, administered intravenously. Lab-created antibodies (proteins) attach themselves to the spike protein of the coronavirus, and prevent the virus from entering and infecting healthy cells in your body.
