The plans for the Lelylijn railway line to the Northern Netherlands must also consider the feasibility of a tunnel under the Ketelmeer for the train and cars.
The province insists on this in a draft letter to the Lelylijn Steering Group. This will be discussed with the Provincial Council on Wednesday. The Steering Group asks governments and other stakeholders to respond to so-called lines of thought and scenarios for the Lely Line by May. In the future, the railway line should run from Lelystad to Groningen and Leeuwarden.
A tunnel under the Ketelmeer is one of the things that the province is missing from the plans. More attention should also be paid to the connection of the Lely line to existing track. There are already bottlenecks between Almere and Amsterdam, which will only increase with more trains via the Lely line. That is why the province points out the importance of the IJmeer connection to relieve the railway in the Randstad.
A condition for the province is that the Lely line in any case stops in Almere Centrum, Lelystad, and at the future Emmeloord station. Only then will the Lely Line have added value for Flevoland, according to the draft letter.
Limit effects on the living environment
The province also states that the Lely Line must have as few negative effects as possible on the residential environment. Where possible, the railway line must be combined with existing roads, so that the consequences for the landscape are limited.
The different variants for new high-voltage cables for the power grid must also be taken into account. Finally, Flevoland lacks attention to the effects of the Lely Line for the development of the northern Netherlands in the very long term after 2050.
More homes and jobs
In the “thinking directions” in various scenarios, the Lelylijn Steering Group has calculated that the construction of the railway in the northern Netherlands could create 66,000 to 100,000 new homes and 62,000 to 125,000 jobs.
The State Committee of the Provincial Council will discuss the draft letter on Wednesday. In December, the States already adopted a motion from the BBB, Christian Union and the CDA to specifically include the renewal of the Ketelbrug in the long-term plans for Flevoland.
