Today, April 26, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the allocation of 3.5 million euros to improve the availability of innovative medicines for oncology patients.
The targeted funding will allow approximately 200 patients with oncological disease to continue receiving innovative drug therapy this year. Therapy costs about 17 thousand euros per patient.
Last year, slightly more than 1.8 million euros of excise revenue in the first half of 2021 was allocated to improve the availability of innovative medicines in this way.
The allocation of additional public budget resources is an important support for the development of the field of oncology in order to ensure the availability of the necessary health care services, including improving the availability of new medicines through personalized and targeted treatment. According to research, the inclusion of innovative drugs in the treatment of oncology patients reduces premature cancer mortality by 20-25%, thus increasing life expectancy, which is a benefit to the economy as a whole.
The Law “On the State Budget for 2021” stipulates that if the actual revenue from excise tax revenue from tobacco products exceeds the revenue forecast for the respective quarter, the funds are directed to the provision of treatment for oncological diseases.
