Since August 2020, as of May 2021, more than three thousand criminal cases have been initiated in Belarus for violating the procedure for holding mass events and protests.
A protest rally for May 9 is being convened in Belarus, opposition leader Pavel Latushko said in an interview with Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.
“I will use social networks to urge Belarusians to take to the streets. If Lukashenka had beat the protesters on May 9, he would have gone down in Belarusian history as a fascist,” Latushko said.
According to him, 35,000 people have been arrested at protests in Belarus since summer 2020. There is evidence that 4,646 people were severely tortured and nine were killed or died as a result of ill-treatment.
Latushko notes that “the repression has engulfed all sectors of society, and they are the worst in Europe over the past 40 years.”
It should be reminded that since August 2020, protests have continued in Belarus related to the announcement of the results of the presidential elections, according to which Alexander Lukashenko won. Ukraine and many European countries, the USA and Canada do not recognize Lukashenko as the president of Belarus.
