Protests in New York: Activists Arrested in Opposition to Israeli Bombings in Gaza

According to the group Jewish Voice for Peace-New York City, several thousand participants blocked the main concourse of Grand Central Station on Friday.

Several hundred people were arrested in New York on Friday, October 27, during a demonstration organized by a Jewish movement opposed to Israeli bombings on the Gaza Strip. The police announced at least 200 arrests, while organizers spoke of more than 300 people arrested during the dispersal of this gathering inside Grand Central station.

Photos taken at the scene showed long lines of handcuffed young people wearing black tops with the expressions printed in white. “Not In Our Name” (“Not in our name”) et “Cease Fire Now” (“Ceasefire now”). The sit-in was organized by the group Jewish Voice for Peace-New York City, which says several thousand participants blocked the main concourse of the station. In some images, we can see the terminal crowded with protesters brandishing banners on which was notably written “The Palestinians must be free.”

Rabbis kicked off the event by lighting Shabbat candles and reciting Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead. “Shabbat is usually a day of rest, but we cannot afford to rest while genocide is taking place in our name”said Rabbi May Ye in a statement released by the organizers. “The lives of Palestinians and Israelis are intertwined, and security can only come from justice, equality and freedom for all”she added.

On Friday evening, the Israeli army intensified its bombardments on the Gaza Strip. These strikes destroyed “hundreds of buildings and houses”according to the spokesperson for the Palestinian civil defense.
