Protests in Lèves over Plan to Close Classes

A plan to close classes in Lèves leads to protests from parents and elected officials. They demonstrated this Saturday morning in the streets.

Around seventy parents, children and elected officials from Lèves demonstrated this morning, Saturday January 20, in the center of the town to protest against the desire of the academic inspectorate of Eure-et-Loir to remove a class in Elementary school. Gathered in the school parking lot, they then went to the main intersection to stop vehicles and distribute leaflets.

This demonstration took place 24 hours after a dead school operation, where parents were invited by the parents’ association not to send their child to class. 75% of the workforce was absent.

Among the strongest staff in the department

Lèves suffered the loss of three classes in two years: two nursery schools and one elementary school. This time, it is a new elementary class which is in danger in this school which has just benefited from a vast rehabilitation operation worth around 2.5 million euros, with the help of the State up to €500,000 and the Department.

The school currently has 313 students and, according to the National Education Services, there will be 290 children at the start of the school year. By going from thirteen to twelve classes, this would shift the average number of children per class from 23.85 to 24.33. Or a workforce that ranks among the strongest in the department.

And that’s without taking into account, according to parents and the mayor, Rémi Martial (LR), the arrivals over the years which are always more numerous than the departures, but also the real estate programs in progress.

“We managed to have a stable teaching team. We welcome an audience of real social diversity,” describes Rémi Martial. He adds: “As much as last year, we did not fight so much because the closure was quite justified in terms of the numbers, this year it is not and we will continue to fight against this project. »
