According to the newspaper, thousands of protesters took to the streets in Shanghai, China’s largest city. They chanted “Xi Jinping, get out!” and “Communist Party, get out!”. Such open calls are unusual for China, as a prison for criticizing the authorities is expected in such an authoritarian state.

The BBC notes that the Chinese authorities did not expect such a reaction to the “zero covid” policy. It was the quarantine restrictions that became the main reason for the start of protests in many cities of China.
In a comment to the publication, one of the protesters said he was “shocked and excited” when he saw people on the street. According to him, this is the first case of such large-scale actions in China.
At the same time, another protester noted that the police also support the protesters’ demands, but they are forced to do their job.
As the BBC points out, there were clashes with the police during the protests. One of the protesters said his friend was beaten by police and two others were pepper sprayed.
