French President Emmanuel Macron said the overnight clashes following the killing of a teenager by police were “not justified”.
Riots erupted for the second night in a row in France, in which cars were burned and police were attacked using fireworks in response to the killing of the young man, “Nael” at a traffic checkpoint, at a time when thousands of security men were deployed to prevent the expansion of violent protests.
The French Interior Ministry said that security forces arrested 150 people overnight, describing the protests as “intolerable”.
17-year-old Nael was driving a rented car early Tuesday, when two policemen stopped him after passing a checkpoint, before one of them shot him, as a video clip showed.
The French Interior Minister confirmed the opening of an investigation into the incident, the interrogation of police officers, and the detention of the policeman accused of shooting the driver on charges of murder. He described the incident as “very shocking”.
