Protests erupt in Belgrade after parliamentary election results are announced

A protest rally led by the opposition coalition “Serbia Against Violence” began in Belgrade on December 18. After speaking at the start of the rally in front of the Belgrade Assembly building, the column moved to the Republican Electoral Commission (REC) building, where they announced they would present evidence of violations of electoral rules in Belgrade.

One of the members of the expanded composition of the Serbian REC, Jovan Rajic, said that the electoral process itself, its legitimacy and legality were undermined by yesterday’s handling and activities of the ruling coalition. He accused the authorities of carousel voting, reported portal N1.

As an example, Jovan Rajic spoke about a large number of buses, the passengers of which were taken to voting stations in the presence of security. “This was election engineering that had never happened before,” he said.

And the candidate for mayor of the Serbian capital from the Serbia Against Violence coalition, Vladimir Obradovic, said at the beginning of a rally in front of the Belgrade Assembly that the coalition would not accept the election results in the capital because, according to him, they were stolen.

“We cannot accept the results of the elections in Belgrade, you all witnessed numerous violations, and despite this, the SNS and SPS cannot form power in Belgrade,” he said.

He also added that his coalition retained “boxes, evidence and materials” pointing to these violations.

“And now we will take them to the REC, hand them over there and wait until these elections are cancelled,” Obradovic emphasized.

According to him, the elections do not reflect the will of the citizens of Belgrade. Srdjan Milivojevic of the coalition “Serbia Against Violence” declared at the same rally that they have “strong and irrefutable evidence that the elections were stolen.”

“We are going to the REC to ask for a cancellation. This is not an election, this is an imitation,” he emphasized.

“We have a lot of evidence, comments and objections from numerous observers in Belgrade, but this applies not only to Belgrade, but to the whole of Serbia,” Milivojevic added.

According to preliminary data from the REC of Serbia, the Aleksandar Vučić – Serbia Must Not Stop coalition (SNS) received 47.36%, the opposition – 22.7%.
