Tensions high in the United States over police violence. Five uniformed men are accused of killing a 29-year-old black man during his arrest in Memphis.
There have been protests both in Tennessee and across the country, demanding police reform. Clashes also occurred in New York. Last night, Memphis police released footage of the man being pulled over for a traffic stop, showing five uniformed men kicking and punching 29-year-old Tyree Nichols.
Footage from the night of the January 7 arrest shows the brutal beating inflicted on the unarmed Nichols by the five police officers.
He was subsequently taken to hospital, where he recovered from his wounds 3 days later. The men in uniform, who, like Nicholas, are black, are charged with murder, assault and kidnapping. His family demanded justice.
“My son had a beautiful soul. He was a good boy,” said Ravan Wells, mother of Tyree Nicholas, quoted by BTA.
“We will not allow black officers to be treated any differently than white officers.” We want equal justice under the law,” commented Benjamin Crump, the family’s lawyer.
The US president has confirmed that legislative changes are needed for police reform. Three years ago, the death of George Floyd, also caused by police violence, raised the debate about the excessive use of force by law enforcement.
