Protests against the new government have begun in Slovakia: EADaily

The Slovak opposition held a protest against the government of Prime Minister Robert Fico. The rally took place on December 7 at Freedom Square in Bratislava.

Several thousand people gathered at the rally, chanting “No more Fico!” and held banners with the inscriptions “We will not be silent” and “You will not get away with this.” The rally was organized by the opposition parties Progressive Slovakia, Freedom and Solidarity and the Christian Democratic Movement. According to their representatives, the protest was directed primarily against the new government coalition’s plan to abolish the special prosecutor’s office.

“Fico also wants to take control of public media and other government institutions,” – said the chairman of the Progressive Slovakia party Michal Shimecka.

He called on the opposition and the public to unite against the attempt of the new ruling coalition to “seize the state”, and also announced new protests.

“Fico probably thought he could surprise us with the speed and brutality with which he dismantled the rule of law. He was wrong, we love Slovakia and will defend it today and in the future,” – the politician emphasized.

Other speakers at the rally accused Fico of wanting to destroy democracy and remain in power as long as possible.

Let us recall that the new coalition government of Slovakia was formed by Robert Fico after the victory of his party Smer-SD in the parliamentary elections last fall. The new cabinet has proposed abolishing the special prosecutor’s office, which controls the investigation of the most serious criminal cases, as well as corruption cases of previous governments. It is planned that on January 15, 2024, all cases will be transferred to the jurisdiction of the Prosecutor General’s Office, headed by Maros Zilinka.
