Protests Against Netanyahu Continue in Israel: Calls for Early Elections and Hostage Release

Protests against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel continue. In front of the parliament in Jerusalem, tens of thousands of demonstrators demanded early elections and a quick agreement to release the hostages still in the hands of the terrorist organization Hamas. According to the Israeli media N12 News, this was the largest demonstration since the outbreak of war.

Opposition leader Yair Lapid sharply criticized Netanyahu. He says the prime minister is destroying Israel’s relationship with the US and has left Hamas hostages to their fate. “Everything is done for politics, not for the country.”

There is no agreement with Hamas

Netanyahu has flatly rejected criticism of his handling of the negotiations, as well as calls for new elections. “Calls for elections now, at the height of the war, just before victory, will paralyze Israel for at least half a year, maybe eight months,” he told a news conference.

In addition, early elections would paralyze negotiations for the release of further hostages against the establishment of a truce in the war in Gaza, as well as the release of Palestinian prisoners, the Israeli prime minister said, quoted by ARD. This “would bring the war to an end before the objectives are achieved”, respectively it would be beneficial for Hamas. Netanyahu stressed that he would continue to stick to his course: “We will enter Rafah and eliminate all the Hamas battalions there for one reason only – without that there will be no victory. Eliminating Hamas is one of the important goals of this war, including the return of hostages”.

For now, however, the truce negotiations are stalling. An agreement with Hamas has not been reached. According to media reports, an Israeli delegation has left for new talks in Cairo, writes ARD.
