Protests against migrants spirals out of hand in Dover, England

During a demonstration against migrants in the southern England of Dover, a confrontation between protesters and the police came on Saturday. Ten protesters were arrested.

About hundreds of protesters gathered in the English coastal city on Saturday. They sang patriotic songs wearing masks bearing the Union Jack, the flag of the United Kingdom. The protesters also halted traffic on a busy highway for more than an hour. Ten protesters were arrested in clashes with the police.

A counter-demonstration had also shown up. The Kent Anti-Racism Network wanted to show solidarity with the refugees. Last night, the humanitarian charity Freedom From Torture also projected the message “Transcend Fear, Refugees Welcome” on the white cliffs of Dover.

More and more migrants try to cross the Channel and try to reach Dover in Britain via Calais in France. On Wednesday, 400 migrants tried to cross the Channel, the largest number in one day. This year it is estimated that more than 300 boats have already crossed the Channel, with more than 5,000 refugees on board.

Crossing the Channel in small boats is not without danger because the Channel is busy with large ships. According to the British authorities, the increase in the number of crossing attempts can be explained by the good weather, the corona pandemic and the changed way of checking in Calais.
